The Impostor

Ah, beware of the impostor
It is time to lift the veil

The veil of illusion that they wear to seduce you
Recreating the art of others and calling it theirs

Beware of these impostors
Who come on the pretense of greed

Their predatory behavior amplified by your cries for help
They hear you and they are coming

They will call themselves a healer
They will call themselves your friend

They are neither of those things
You must be wary of these impostors

They try to solicit you on social media
Where you advertise your woes so freely

They try to solicit you on social media
Where they have curated a self that you wish for

They try to solicit you on social media
Where you have curated a vision board of desire

They see your desires and act upon them
Offering all until you are left with none

Beware of the impostors who call you friend
Their fakeness bubbling up on the occasional meet-up

Lies streaming from their tongue in the form of promises
“We must do this more often!” is one of the easier promises to make

More often never comes and you know that
So beware of these impostors, friends

If quarantine has taught me anything
It is in the power of the impostor

Those who are willing to solicit the weak
To suck them dry before moving along

What is the best countermeasure, then
For these impossibly illusory impostors

Education and understanding are the keys to knowledge
You must educate and understand yourself first

When I realized that it was not their fault for solicitation
It was mine for offering the scent of fresh blood

It is like blaming a tiger for the kill
When the kill happened to be human

The tiger does not see beyond its hunger and wanting
It just sees its prey

I thought I had no friends
Up until this quarantine

You know what I found out
The long-distance ones were there all along

They continue to check up on me from across the world
In turn, the friends in my town have become ghost-like

The pandemic has illuminated more understanding
About what it means to be a friend

This pandemic has illuminated more understanding
About what it means to be a healer

This pandemic has illuminated more understanding
About what it means to be an impostor

Ah, beware of the impostor
They wear well-fitted cloaks of illusion

Ah, beware, you impostor
I see through your well-fitted cloak of illusion

And I am enlightening the others
About what it means to be an impostor

It is easy to become an impostor
To derive personality from the personalities of others

To attempt to trick other people into thinking that you know
I know that you do not know

Beware of the more skilled impostors
They have made my body sweat

My mind and heart racing out of fear
Fear that I am inadequate in their eyes

Beware of this impostor
The ones who manage to penetrate your self-assurance

They will offer their hands in assistance
And then proceed to stomp on yours

These impostors are afraid of you
Because you embody what they wish for

These impostors hate you
Because they failed where you achieved success

These impostors will be the friendliest people
Until they have comfortably gained access to you

And then they will leave
Like the impostors they are

Taking your money, ideas, art and expectations with them
And whatever else they can carry

When you choose who surrounds you in life
Just be sure to beware the impostors
